Chapter 15

Sophia's song was centuries old, but it had become popular again in the year of my birth. The Seelie had sung it at weddings, funerals, the summer solstice, the autumnal equinox and every other gathering for decades. It was a constant reminder of the pressure the prophecy had placed on me until finally its prevalence petered out again—about the same time their faith in me began to wane.

Since I'd found my Anam Cara in Alexander, much to my consternation, my celebrity had returned. I didn't relish the thought of that song's popularity resurging too.

We zigzagged our way through the crowd, although my original goal of finding Cora had completely slipped my mind. I stepped off the pathway into the clinic, now a pavilion with a thatched roof and cobblestone floor, to disengage from the crowds. Rosheen sat at a table near the village green, laughing with a trio of men. I waved, signaling for her to join me, then grimaced as Sophia progressed from humming to singing the dreaded song.

"The time will come, the time is near,

When our Angel Fathers will soon appear.

Their gifts will come, one by one,

To this blessed child, who will one day come.

All will be forgiven. Home to heaven we shall race.

When the King's Jewel's child takes his place.

The time will come, the time is near,

When our Angel Fathers will soon appear."

I sat with a thump on the log bench. Sophia took advantage of the empty pavilion and danced for my entertainment, practicing her ballet to her own accompaniment while holding tight to her doll. Rosheen arrived a moment later.

"What's wrong?" she asked, taking a seat next to me. I lifted my chin toward Sophia. After listening to a measure or two of the song, the wrinkles across her forehead relaxed. "Oh."

Sophia spotted Rosheen and skipped over to show off her new toy.

"A leanbh, did Mistress O'Malley teach you that song?" I asked.

"No, I wanted to teach her, but she already knew it." Hardly surprising, I thought to myself. Any Sidhe over the age of 70 had to know that song.

"Where did you learn it?" Rosheen asked.

"The pretty lady in the woods taught me." Rosheen and I shared a worried glance.

"What lady? Do you know her name? Was it Cora?" I asked, grasping at straws. There was a time when I would have trusted any of my brethren with a child, but my brother had destroyed that blind faith.

"No, not Miss Cora. This lady had super long black hair, almost to her toes, and she was all glowy."

"Do you mean her skin was pearlized like mine?" Her description of the woman only added to my confusion.

"Noooo. All of her glowed. She was an angel."

"Are you saying you saw an actual angel?" I lowered my voice and cupped my hand around my mouth as I spoke, not wanting anyone to overhear. The last thing I needed at this point, with people suspecting that we had the cauldron, was for rumors of angels to flare up. I would never get a moment's peace.
